  James Ryan

Jim Ryan is a Greenwich, Connecticut native who pursued a 20 year career in surveying and map making prior to returning to his first calling of marine and landscape art. Jim studied painting at the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts, Storrs, Connecticut and has continued his studies on his own. His awards have included the Fleet Bank Purchase Award, 1999, Honorable Mention at the Art Society of Old Greenwich Sidewalk Show, Second Place Acrylic Award at the 2000 YWCA/Art Society of Old Greenwich Juried show, Honorable Mention at the Spring Show of the Greenwich Art Society, Second Place Acrylic Award at the 2000 Oil-Acrylic Show at the Rowayton Arts Center, Honorable Mention at the 2002 Spring Show of the Stamford Art Association 2001, Honorable Mention Oil/Acrylic at the 2002 Spring Show of the Art Society of Old Greenwich, First Place Acrylic Award at the Art Society of Old Greenwich 2002 Juried Show. He was accepted by the Screening Committee of the Greenwich Art Society to hold a one person exhibitions and by the Screening Committee of the Rowayton Arts Center as a Full Exhibiting Member.

His present series of paintings focuses small craft and boatyards. Jim spends a good deal of his time traveling the Connecticut coastline in search of subject matter. When a promising subject is found he will sketch and photograph it in the field. This information is later used in his studio to produce the small, detailed, acrylic paintings on which he is currently concentrating. In addition to the area around Greenwich, his favorite sites are Stonington and Mystic, CT. He is a member of the Art Society of Old Greenwich, the Greenwich Art Society, and the Rowayton Arts Center. His paintings have been exhibited by galleries in Nantucket, MA and Annapolis, MD. He has works in private collections in San Francisco, CA, Southampton, NY, Greenwich, CT and London, England.
