  Robert Phillips

Robert Phillips was born in Southern California and spent many a leisurely summer at the beach. But it wasn’t until he moved to New York to begin a successful career in the world of advertising that he learned how to sail. It was an activity that would stay with him through club racing, local cruising and two boats of his own. This love affair with “the sail” continues today.

Although educated as an advertising art director and with a bachelor of fine arts degree, it wasn’t until leaving the ad business that Bob began to paint. Not surprisingly, his subject of choice revolves around the sea. “There are plenty of historical marine painters and an abundance of landscape painters who deal with the surf, but I haven’t seen much work that illustrates the nuts and bolts of the contemporary marine world many of us have incorporated into our lives.” Being a boatyard buff, Bob developed a fascination for the ‘sculptural look’ of a boat out of the water. Add to that an interest in the play of light, shadow and reflection on the surface of a hull and you have the subject matter for some interesting painting.

Bob will be quick to tell you that he has just begun to explore his talent and that he feels he has a lot to learn. Yet within the first six months of laying paint to canvas he won two awards at juried shows sponsored by The Greenwich Art Society. The same organization gave him his first one-man show.

Bob has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Advertising Design from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He has studied with Enzo Russo at the Greenwich Art Society.

Don’t be surprised of find Bob hanging around a boatyard near by. He lives and works in Stamford, Connecticut.
