Tracy Sugarman is an artist whose provocative reportorial art has documented many facets of American corporate and institutional life.
His work was first seen by a national audience in the pages of magazines such as Fortune, Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Boys' Life and The New York Times Sunday Magazine. Among the book publishers who have used his talents are Random House, Simon & Schuster, Time-Life Books and Doubleday & Co.
For more than twenty years, Tracy has specialized in reportage, both in pictures and words. His works have been commissioned by NASA, and his paintings of the Space Shuttle, Columbia, are now part of the permanent Smithsonian collection.
When he covered the civil rights movement in the South during the 1960s, his work was featured in a nationally televised program on CBS-TV; was published internationally by the U.S. Information Agency; and was published in the United States by the Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, and American Artist Magazine. His book, Stranger at the Gates, published by Hill & Wang in 1966, recorded the drama of the racial revolution which was taking place in the South.
Tracy's corporate clients reflect the rich diversity of the American scene. His paintings and drawings have been commissioned by Cadbury Schweppes, IBM, Exxon, American Airlines, Western Electric, American Petroleum Institute, Marathon Oil, AT&T and American Express.
Among his institutional clients are Yale-New Haven Hospital, Bank of Darien, Inn at National Hall, University of Hartford, People's Bank, and the law firm of Robinson & Cole. In 1993, Tracy created a sixteen-panel mural for the new Lucie Bedford Warren Pediatric Unit of Norwalk Hospital.
Tracy has been the recipient of numerous awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York City and the Art Directors Club in Washington, D.C. His drawings, paintings and writings have been featured in more than twenty film documentaries produced by Rediscovery Productions, Inc. Three of the film documentaries which he wrote and co-produced have won the prestigious Cine Golden Eagle Award. Many of his paintings and drawings appear in private, corporate and institutional collections throughout the United States.
